Case study: Portugal Telecom rebuilds its pay-TV service and defends its core business with MEO

Portugal Telecom (PT) spun off its PT Multimedia business unit in November 2007, and had to rebuild its pay-TV business in order to compete against its former subsidiary. PT launched MEO, its new pay-TV service, in April 2008 and had more than one million pay-TV subscribers by September 2012, accounting for 46% of its fixed-line subscribers. PT defended its fixed voice and broadband business while becoming the largest provider of triple-play services in Portugal.
