Current consumer use of smart home technology is low; less than half of the respondents surveyed use technology that allows them to remotely monitor and control appliances and devices in their home. However, interest in using smart home technology is high. For service providers to be accepted as a consolidated service provider for phone, media, environment, and security, they must establish a sense of knowledge and expertise within all areas. Gaining trust as well as positive reviews, is imperative. Providers should offer short term subscriptions to gain the confidence of the consumer, as well as offer subsidized prices for hardware. The idea of Wi-Fi enabled appliances and devices is appealing to the majority of participants as there is a lack of dependency on a service provider, lower costs and the ability to manage and control the technology themselves.
