Mobile handset data, fixed broadband and IPTV will offer the greatest growth opportunities in North America over the next 5 years.
North AmericaThe outlook for the USA has improved because we forecast stronger growth in mobile handset data services and in fixed broadband and IPTV, which will compensate for the erosion of revenue in the fixed and mobile voice markets. By the end of 2018, 88% of active handsets in the USA will be smartphones. We now forecast that retail telecoms revenue in the USA will grow at a 0.9% CAGR during 2013–2018, compared with our previous forecast of –0.5%.

In Canada, we also expect growth services to compensate for the decline in voice revenue, but to a lesser extent than previously forecast. We now forecast retail telecoms revenue to be stable during 2013–2018, compared with our previous forecast of a 0.4% CAGR.
This report and associated data annex provide:
an analysis of the latest developments in the telecoms market in North America
an assessment of the impact of these trends on connections and revenue in Canada and the USA
an explanation of how and why our forecasts have changed since the previous edition of this report, which was published in May 2013
detailed historical data and forecasts from 2009 to 2018 for Canada, the USA and the North America region as a whole.
