Every year, Strategy Analytics puts together list of likely predictions that will shape the year ahead in M2M and the Internet of Things (IoT). 2014 saw the industry move away from the term M2M and towards a more open and obsessively hyped term the Internet of Things or IoT. While smartphones and tablets have stolen the limelight in recent years they are also now taking a back seat, or rather providing an access point for, a new wave of connectivity. With the Internet of Things now in the vanguard, the world of connecting objects to people as well as other objects is p progressing faster than it ever has in the past.
1 Executive Summary
2 The Top Ten Trends in IoT
2.1 New developer and connectivity platforms will continue to emerge and will put pressure on existing platform providers that have been serving the M2M market
2.2 M&A activity will continue to soar unabated in 2015
2.3 IoT becomes more personal: Mobile devices such as smartphones become a critical component of IoT for both accessing information about machine devices, but also a node and hub in the Internet of Things
2.4 Apps will dominate IoT user interaction in 2015, but this siloed approach will simply be a first step, or the client-server relationship in phase one of IoT, as we move towards a richer, more interactive "web of things", combining objects and the semantic web
2.5 IoT architecture will see more decentralization as elements move to the edge of the network. By moving the query to the data, more relevant information can be retrieved from devices meaning greater efficiency in utilization of network bandwidth
2.6 Location-aware systems will gather pace in industries such as retail and smart cities that will allow for proximity-based interaction with users
2.7 New analytics tools will be needed to handle the diversity of IoT data
2.8 Enterprise boundaries expand as they start to explore how IoT offers real differentiation, efficiency and business process improvement as well as how it fits into their existing infrastructure, new business models will be formed as well in 2015
2.9 Data privacy and ownership will become a prominent issue in IoT, as increasingly machine data is blended with social network data
2.10 Security becomes paramount-risk-based security and context-based security emerges
3 Conclusion
