Deep Research on China's Calcium Metal Market 2015

Calcium is a light silver-gray metal. Currently, the most common shapes of calcium are blocks, crumbles and particles, the last of which is mainly used for production of calcium-base cored wire in manufacturing high purity steel and steel plates. Main alloys are Calcium Aluminum alloys and calcium-magnesium alloys.

The prices of calcium vary depending on what kinds of technologies were applied. The price of electrolytic calcium is twice than that of aluminothermic calcium but it is purer, due to a higher cost of its technologies and equipment. Shanxi province, Inner Mongolia and Henan province are important areas of calcium production.

In 2013, China's production capacity of calcium was 82,000 tons, with a compound growth rate of over 20%. In 2013, China's production of calcium reached 71,000 tons.

The main downstream industry of calcium is steel and iron industry, which witnessed an annual growth of 3.6% in global steel production in 2014. Steel production in Europe met a terminal decline last year after dropping for 6 consecutive years, but witnessed a growth of 2.4% in 2014. China's steel production is expected to increase by 4% over last year.

By 2018, China's calcium production capacity will reach 180,000 tons and the production of calcium will reach 160,000 tons.

The downstream markets of calcium are primarily the steel industry. The accelerating urbanization of China will drive the demand of steel in all infrastructures. Accordingly, the thriving steel industry will also trigger the demand of calcium.
