Surgical sutures are medical devices used to close the edges of a wound, or repair injuries such as lacerations resulting from surgery or other procedures. In the wound healing process, the choice of wound closure material is as significant as the skill and technique of the surgeon. Sutures have undergone many technological advancements ranging from the introduction of nylon and polyester sutures decades ago, to the present day absorbable sutures such as Vicryl and Monocryl, to cater to the specific needs of different types of surgeries. The increasing number of minimally invasive procedures has posed challenges in suturing and knot tying which led to the advent of automated suturing devices that have greatly simplified the process and allow surgeons to perform efficient suturing and knot tying.

The global sutures market was valued at USD 2.80 billion in 2014 and is expected to reach USD 3.59 billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 4.2% between 2015 and 2020.

The growth in the surgical sutures market is primarily driven by the growing number of surgical procedures across the globe that is, in turn, fueled by improving healthcare facilities such as increasing number of hospitals, clinics, and operating facilities, especially in emerging economies. The rising healthcare expenditure, owing to the increasing disposable income of the population, is amplifying the number of surgeries, thereby increasing the sutures market. The rise in this market in developed countries is expected due to the increasing aging population that is creating increased demand for all kinds of surgical intervention, particularly cardiovascular, orthopedic, urological, and dermatological procedures. The increasing number of minimally invasive surgeries are augmenting the market of automated suturing devices while restraining the market of sutures.
