The battery manufacturing industry can be classified into i) Primary Battery manufacturing that comprises establishments manufacturing disposable flashlight batteries, dry cells, lithium batteries and watch batteries. And ii) Storage Battery Manufacturing that include establishments manufacturing storage batteries. Storage batteries are rechargeable batteries that can be recharged by passing a current through it in the opposite direction of its discharge.

Asia Pacific was the largest region in the batteries manufacturing market in 2016, accounting for 79.0% market share. This is mainly due to high demand for batteries from automobile industries and commercial establishments in the region. North America was the second largest region accounting for 8% market share. And Western Europe was the third largest region accounting for 6.5% market share.

Secondary Batteries segment was the largest segment in the batteries manufacturing market with around 83% share of the market. This can be attributed to comparatively high demand for storage batteries from industries such as automotive, machinery manufacturing and other manufacturing industries. Primary Batteries segment was the second largest segment in the batteries manufacturing market with around 17% share of the market.

With increasing global warming and consequent rise in government regulations, the demand for clean energy is increasing. Clean energy refers to energy generated from natural sources such as sunlight, wind and others. Renewable energy systems process energy from natural sources into usable forms and store in batteries for use at a later point of time. The Batteries used in renewable energy systems include lead acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries and others.
