2016/06/14 Strategy Analytics: Digitalized Indoor Coverage Benefits both Cellular Service Providers and Airport Operators

by Sue Rudd, Guang Yang, Phil Kendall | Jun 02, 2016

Boston, MA - May 31, 2016 – As mobile device use at airports escalates, digitalized indoor coverage solutions not only provide passengers mobile broadband connectivity, but also enable new services and new business models for cellular service providers and airport operators, concludes Strategy Analytics. In the new report: ‘Digitalized Indoor Solution Makes Airports Smarter and Enables Better Connected Travel Experience’ Strategy Analytics Wireless Network and Platforms service indicates the advantages of small cell platform compared to a traditional Distributed Antenna System (DAS).

Guang Yang, Senior Analyst commented “Small cell platforms with C-RAN architecture can significantly improve indoor mobile broadband performance. Recently this has been proven by benchmarking several large Chinese airports. In addition the digitalized solution can be installed more easily and quickly than the DAS system to accelerate time-to-market.”

Sue Rudd, Director of Service Provider Analysis, added “Integration of digitalized indoor coverage system with Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) can also enable both cellular service providers and real estate owners to add value with smart services. Airport operators can leverage real-time location information and mobile edge computing capability to provide airport navigation, location based services and targeted advertisements.”

Airport operators can also get inputs to help optimize their own operations and to adjust the airport facilities layout according to the analytics of passenger traffic and behavior from these small cells.
